July 14, 2026, Hautes-Pyrénées. Two groups of hikers airlifted to Tarbes hospital. Nine victims. Cause: stream water consumed in the mountains. A similar accident had already occurred in August 2025, this time with a filtering water bottle.
Water flowing from a mountain stream often appears to be of impeccable purity. Clear, fresh, natural, it easily gives the impression of being drinkable. Yet in July 2026, the Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne (PGHM) intervened twice within a few hours in the Hautes-Pyrénées: five hikers near the Glère refuge in Barèges, four others at Lac de Bastan in the Aure valley. All airlifted. All victims of severe digestive disorders.
A few months earlier, in August 2025, a 17-year-old hiker had also been evacuated by helicopter after drinking water from Lac d'Anglas in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, while using a filtering water bottle.
Clear water is not safe drinking water
A high mountain stream often appears to be of impeccable purity. It is an illusion. Even far from any habitation, various sources of contamination exist:
- Wild animal droppings (marmots, chamois, sheep)
- Livestock on the upstream alpine pastures
- Human activities around mountain refuges
- Heavy rain washing the soil and carrying contaminants into waterways
- Algae and cyanobacteria in high-altitude lakes
These contaminations are invisible to the naked eye and can cause severe gastroenteritis within just a few hours.

What your filtering bottle does not tell you
Most filtering water bottles on the market are excellent against bacteria and parasites like Giardia. But they have a significant blind spot: viruses.

Why do viruses pass through?
The answer is a simple matter of size. A bacterium measures between 0.5 and 5 microns. A virus measures only 20 to 100 nanometres, up to fifty times smaller. Many filtering bottles use a membrane of 0.1 to 0.2 microns, very effective against bacteria, but insufficient to retain viruses.
The NSF/ANSI P231 standard: the criterion to check
The NSF/ANSI P231 standard is the most demanding international reference for evaluating portable water purifiers. It tests effectiveness against bacteria, parasites and viruses, including rotavirus, under controlled laboratory conditions. A P231-certified purifier must prove its performance across all three families of contaminants. It is the only criterion that guarantees real protection in the wild.
